Finance questions

How much deposit do I need for a truck in NZ?

Many New Zealand operators buy a truck with no deposit at all, financing up to 100% of the purchase price. Whether that is available to you depends on the truck, your trading history and the income behind it. A deposit of 10 to 20% widens the lender options and usually improves the rate.

The detail

Deposit requirements on commercial vehicles are far more flexible than most people expect, because the truck itself is security. A lender looking at a well-specified truck with a strong resale market will take a different view to one looking at an ageing unit with a narrow buyer pool.

What tends to decide it is the combination: the age and hours of the truck, whether you have traded before, and whether there is contracted work behind it. An owner-driver with a signed contract is often a stronger application than a larger business without one.

If you do have a deposit available, it is worth asking whether it is better used as a deposit or kept as working capital. That answer changes depending on the business, and it is a conversation worth having before you commit.

Related questions

Can I use a trade-in as the deposit?

Yes, in most cases. The equity in a truck you already own can serve as the deposit on the next one, and we can look at settling any existing finance on it at the same time.

Does a bigger deposit always mean a better rate?

Usually, but not always, and the difference is not always worth the cash. Beyond about 20% the improvement often flattens out. It is worth comparing the two structures rather than assuming more deposit is better.

Are on-road costs and the body build included?

Often yes. Registration, compliance, decks, cranes and signwriting can frequently be financed alongside the truck where the deal supports it, so the vehicle goes to work ready rather than in stages.
