Finance questions

What credit score do I need for a car loan in NZ?

There is no single number. New Zealand lenders use different scoring models and weigh income, stability and the vehicle alongside the score. Broadly, above 600 opens most options and above 700 gets the sharpest pricing, but people below both are approved every week where the rest of the application is sound.

The detail

Credit scores in New Zealand generally run from 0 to 1000, and the three reporting agencies each calculate them slightly differently. That alone should tell you the number is a guide rather than a gate.

What a lender is really assessing is whether you can afford the repayments and whether your history suggests you will make them. A score summarises the second part. It says nothing about the first, which is why a strong income and a stable job can carry an application that a score alone would not.

The vehicle matters too. Secured lending against an asset with a solid resale market is a different risk to an unsecured personal loan, and it is priced accordingly.

Related questions

Can I check my credit score for free in New Zealand?

Yes. You are entitled to request your credit file from Centrix, Equifax or Illion at no cost, and checking your own file does not affect your score. It is worth doing before you apply so there are no surprises.

Will a low score mean a higher interest rate?

Usually, because the lender is pricing risk. A larger deposit or a stronger asset can bring it down. It is worth asking what would change the answer rather than accepting the first offer you are given.

How can I improve my score before applying?

Pay existing commitments on time, reduce outstanding balances, and avoid making several credit applications in a short window. Improvement is gradual rather than immediate, so it is worth starting well before you need the finance.
