Finance questions

How long does finance approval take in NZ?

Straightforward applications are often answered the same day, sometimes within a couple of hours. Where financials are needed, the asset is unusual, or the purchase is private, it can take a few days. We will tell you which of those you are looking at rather than leaving you waiting for an answer.

The detail

Most of the delay in finance is not the lender thinking. It is waiting on documents. An application that arrives complete moves quickly; one that arrives missing a payslip or an IRD number sits until it is chased.

That is the practical argument for getting your paperwork together before you start looking rather than after you have found something. It also means an approval in principle, sorted early, puts you in a much stronger position when you are negotiating.

Private sales and auction purchases add a step, because we verify the asset and check the PPSR before settlement. That is worth the extra day.

Related questions

Can I get pre-approved before I find a vehicle?

Yes, and it is usually the better order. Knowing what you can borrow before you start looking means you negotiate as a cash buyer rather than someone still arranging finance.

What slows an application down most?

Missing documents, income that is hard to verify, and last-minute changes to what is being bought. Telling us early about anything unusual is much better than it surfacing halfway through.

How quickly can the seller be paid?

Once documents are signed and returned, settlement is generally same or next business day. We pay the seller or the auction house directly.
