Finance questions

Can I refinance my car loan in NZ?

Often yes. Refinancing replaces your existing loan with a new one, usually to lower the rate, change the term, or release equity. Whether it is worth doing depends on how far through the current agreement you are and what fees apply to settling it early.

The detail

Refinancing makes most sense when something has changed: your credit position has improved, rates have moved, or the repayments no longer suit your circumstances.

The arithmetic matters though. Early in a loan more of each payment is interest, so refinancing then usually saves more. Late in a term there is often little left to save, and an early settlement fee can wipe out the benefit entirely.

We will tell you honestly if refinancing is not worth it for you. A broker who refinances everything regardless is generating a commission rather than solving a problem.

Sometimes, though the options narrow considerably. It is more likely where you have a strong income or can contribute something towards the shortfall.

Will refinancing hurt my credit score?

There is a credit enquiry involved, and settling one account while opening another is visible on your file. The effect is usually small compared with the benefit of a better structure.

Often yes, where you own it outright and it has resale value. It is a common way for businesses to free up working capital, subject to lender assessment.
