About the continent question
There is a genuinely good piece of trivia here. New Zealand is the visible part of Zealandia, a largely submerged continent of roughly five million square kilometres, about ninety-four percent of which is underwater. So we are, technically and pleasingly, continental already.
We cannot finance any of the submerged portion either. We arrange loans for cars, utes, trucks, boats and machinery, above sea level, in New Zealand.
Where we can actually lend
Our lenders assess New Zealand income, New Zealand credit history and your right to be here. An application from someone living permanently in Australia or the Pacific is not something we can place, however sound it looks on paper.
The more useful version of this question comes from people moving to New Zealand rather than away from it. If you have arrived recently on a work visa, or you are a returning New Zealander with years spent overseas, finance is usually possible but the shape of it differs. A thin local credit file is the usual sticking point rather than the income, and lenders weigh visa type and time in the country quite differently from one another.
