Boat and marine finance

Whiting Financial Services

A whiting is a fish. We do not offer financial services to fish, on the grounds that they have no income, no credit history and nothing we could reasonably register a security interest against. We do finance the boat you would catch one from, which is the nearest we can get.

A brief note on lending to fish

The obstacles are substantial. There is no verifiable income, no fixed address, and the Personal Property Securities Register has no provision for anything of the sort. Affordability assessment would be a formality in the worst sense.

Boats are considerably more straightforward, and happen to be something we arrange a great deal of. New or used, through a dealer or privately, trailer boats through to launches.

Buying privately?

A lot of the best boats, bikes and vans are sold privately, and that is where finance usually gets awkward - the seller wants cleared funds and you want to know the money is safe.

We settle directly with the seller, check there is no money owing against it on the PPSR first, and handle the paperwork between you. You do not need to hand over anything before that is done.

Financing the boat instead

A good share of the best boats in the country are sold privately, and that is where finance usually gets awkward - the seller wants cleared funds and you want to know your money is safe until the boat is actually yours.

We settle directly with the seller and run a PPSR check before anything moves. Worth knowing: the boat, the motor and the trailer are often registered separately, so a single search does not necessarily cover all three. Tell us what the package includes and we will check each part rather than assume.

All lending is subject to lender assessment and approval.

Can I finance a repower on its own?

Yes. A new motor on a hull you already own is a common reason to borrow and is arranged differently to financing a whole boat. Tell us which you are doing.

Does the trailer need to be financed separately?

Not usually - it can go on the same arrangement. It is worth confirming it is included in the sale at all, because a boat advertised with a trailer is not always sold with one.

Why use a broker?

For a private sale in particular, going direct to your bank is usually the slow road.
