Finance questions

Can I finance a car from a private seller in NZ?

Yes. Private sales are financed every day in New Zealand, though many banks will not do them. We check the vehicle on the PPSR first to make sure there is no money owing against it, then pay the seller directly once you are happy to proceed.

The detail

Private sales are where finance most often gets awkward. The seller wants cleared funds before the car leaves, you want to know the money is safe, and a bank that only lends against dealer stock is no help to either of you.

The risk people worry about is real but manageable. If a vehicle still has finance owing on it, that debt follows the car rather than the seller, and a buyer who pays cash without checking can lose both the money and the vehicle. A PPSR check before settlement is what prevents that, and it takes minutes.

We settle directly with the seller, so funds go where they should and the paperwork is handled between you. You do not need to hand anything over before that is done.

What is the PPSR and why does it matter?

The Personal Property Securities Register records security interests over things like vehicles and machinery. If a lender has registered an interest, the debt stays attached to the item. Checking before you buy is the only way to be sure you are not inheriting someone else's loan.

Can I finance a car bought at auction?

Yes. Auctions usually require payment quickly, so it is worth arranging finance before you bid rather than after you win.

Does the seller need to do anything?

Very little. We need their bank details and identification to settle, and a signed agreement between you both. We handle the rest.
