Finance questions

What documents do I need to apply for finance?

For a personal application, photo ID, proof of income such as recent payslips or bank statements, and details of what you are buying. For a business application, add your IRD number and either recent financials or GST returns. Having these ready before you apply is the single biggest thing that speeds an approval up.

The detail

Most delays in finance are document delays. An application that arrives complete is often answered the same day; one missing a payslip waits until it is chased.

If you are self-employed and do not have a full set of financials, say so at the start rather than trying to assemble them. Several lenders assess on bank statements, GST returns or contract income instead, and knowing that early changes which lenders we approach rather than costing you a week.

For a private purchase we also need the seller's details so we can verify the asset and settle directly with them.

What if I have just started a new job?

It is not a barrier on its own. Lenders look at the type of work, whether you were in the same industry before, and whether you are past any probation period. Tell us early so we approach the right lenders.

Do I need a deposit ready before applying?

No. It is worth knowing what you can contribute, because it affects the options, but you do not need the funds in place to get an indication.

What if my income varies week to week?

That is normal for contractors, seasonal workers and commission earners. Bank statements over a longer period usually tell the story better than a single payslip, and several lenders assess on exactly that.
